I love helping kids increase their academic confidence, resilience, and resourcefulness. I have a naturally patient, compassionate, determined, and creative approach to make the learning process productive and fun.
As a parent of two kids who have grown up in the Issaquah School District, I understand what it’s like for both students and parents to struggle with school, homework, and studying. During the pandemic, I found myself tutoring my kids as they navigated online schooling. I realized that I looked forward to tutoring and helping them experience the “aha” moment when classwork they thought was impossible to understand became simplified and clear.
One day my son said, “Mom, you should be a tutor because you’re good at it.” Wanting more flexibility and a renewed sense of purpose, I listened to my son. I decided to quit my job and start Tutor with Ivy.
In addition to 1:1 tutoring, I teach study skills because schools don’t always teach students how to study or how to study in ways that best suit that child’s learning style. A student might understand course material but may still struggle to master the material sufficiently to do well on an exam. Having a variety of skills, methods, approaches, and tips to pull out of their toolbox benefits the student not only in their current coursework but in their future academic career as well.
Tutoring and coaching kids so they can succeed in school is a natural extension of my career path, which has always been focused on helping others. As an attorney, I worked for a small law firm where I helped women and other people from marginalized groups set up small businesses. I have led communications for several non-profits, lobbied the legislature for better laws to protect kids from toxic chemicals, and run campaigns to protect the environment. Also, math and science are some of my favorite subjects. In another life I probably would have been a chemistry or botany major!
Each student is unique. I embrace the challenge of working with each student to find the approach that works best for them. It is a pleasure helping students and their parents gain academic confidence and peace of mind today and throughout their academic career.
